Why Conventional Printer Ribbons Still Survive in New POS Solutions

Newer, better, faster Point of Sale solutions are created just about every day. This single point is so common in every business, that it is nearly a given that if you create a better way to getting the money from the customer during a sale, you are going to have a lot of customers to get money from. However, not every great idea works for all occasions.

Thermal Paper rolls for POS receipts are great for a vast majority of the retail market. Thermal printers are quiet, and fast. There are no printer ribbons to mess with, and loading new paper rolls is an easy task. However, some businesses might want to consider keeping their conventional dot matrix printers and the printer ribbon cartridges.

Dot Matrix printers, also called Impact Printers, utilizing printer ribbons allow mulit-page printing (multiple copy forms, invoices and receipts) as well as printing with a method that is more or less permanent. Thermal paper printers can't make either claim. While technology is creating thermal paper which is better than the first generation thermal paper rolls, the receipts will always be heat sensitive, and fade in time.

The recent problems in Colorado and other states with the scramble to install and utilize better voting systems highlighted this problem:

The court also found that the "voter verified" paper trail incorporated in the machines may be useless in a legal challenge. The law requires devices to provide a "permanent" record of votes - which Manzanares said means at least 25 months - but the thermal paper in the printers is likely to start degrading before then.
